Spirochetes(yaws, pinta, Bejel)
Non-veneral disease: yaws, pinta, Bejel
Yaws
Causative agent: T. pertenue
It is highly contagious in childhood
Primary lesion: ulcerating papule on arms & legs
Transmission: by person to person contact
Transplacental or congenital infection does not occur
Scar formation & bone destruction are common
Diagnostic procedure & therapy are similar to syphilis

lPinta
lCausative agent: T. carateum
lOccurs endemically in all age group
lDisease restricted to dark skinned races
lPrimary lesion: Nonulcerating papule on exposed areas
lTransmission: by non-sexual means – direct  contact or by flies
lDiagnosis & treatment are same as for syphilis
lBejel
lCausative agent: T. endemicum
lOccurs particularly among children
lProduces highly infectious skin lesion
lPenicillin is the drug of choice
l
lNon-veneral disease:
lAll give positive treponemal & nontreponemal serologic test for syphilis
lNone are sexually transmitted
lAll are commonly transmitted by direct contact
lNone of the causative agents have been cultured on artificial media.
